A handful of Illinois’ welcoming communities say they’re not worried about Chicago’s lawsuit that challenges President Donald Trump’s sanctuary city policies.

A number of municipalities outside of Chicago are or have been thinking about becoming welcoming communities, which according to the group Welcoming America are “guided by the principles of inclusion and creating communities that prosper because everyone feels welcome, including immigrants and refugees.” They would have pretty much the same policies for illegal immigrants as Chicago.

Carbondale city councilman Adam Loos said the biggest difference is that downstate cities don’t run their own jails and don’t have to worry about informing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about immigration violations.

“In Carbondale, we’re not going to use our limited resources to enforce federal immigration law,” Loos said. “There’s a whole arm of the federal government who’s job it is to do that.”

CAHOKIA, IL – Representative Mike Bost (IL-12) worked behind the counter at the MotoMart in Cahokia, interacting with employees, serving customers, and conversing with constituents about issues important to them. Bost partnered for the special event with the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS)’s In Store program.

“Convenience stores are vital small businesses that provide essential services to time-starved consumers with one-stop shopping, grab-and-go food service, a variety of merchandise and fast transactions,” said Representative Mike Bost. “I was excited to have had the opportunity to participate in the NACS In Store program and witness firsthand the many benefits convenience stores offer to the residents of Cahokia.”

“Convenience stores are the anchor of communities across the country, and they are also where community conversations take place,” said Henry Armour, NACS President and CEO.  “More than half of the country visits a convenience store on a daily basis, whether to buy fuel, use the ATM, wash their cars or quickly buy snacks, drinks or meals. The NACS In Store program gives elected officials a perfect opportunity to experience how these stores serve the public in their home districts.”

Bost Bill to Overhaul VA Appeals Process Passes Senate

By George O’ Connor, Communications director for Congressman Mike Bost

Washington, D.C. Today, Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Chairman Mike Bost (R-IL) applauded the unanimous Senate passage of legislation he authored to modernize the appeals process at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Bost introduced the Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act of 2017 (H.R. 2288) in May and helped guide it to quick passage in the House later that month. After minor technical changes were made in the Senate, the legislation is expected to head back to the House for a vote on final passage in September.

“I applaud Republicans and Democrats in the Senate for passing this critical legislation,” said Bost. “For too long our veterans and their families have faced unacceptable delays during the VA’s benefits claims appeal process. There are currently hundreds of thousands of veterans still waiting on a decision from VA. This simply is unacceptable. We need to get this legislation to the President’s desk for signature as quickly as possible.”

Background:
The Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act of 2017 would create three “lanes” for veterans’ appeals, including the “Local Higher Level Review Lane” in which an adjudicator reviews the same evidence considered by the original claims processor; the “New Evidence Lane,” in which the veteran could submit new evidence for review and have a hearing; and the “Board Lane,” in which jurisdiction for the appeal would transfer immediately to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

Bost, Bergman Demand Investigation into Alleged Mismanagement at Marion VA

Press Release from George O’Connor, Communications Director for Congressman Mike Bost and Amelia Burns, Communications  Director for Congressman Jack Bergman

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Mike Bost (R-Murphysboro, IL) and House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairman Jack Bergman (R-MI) called on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin to investigate allegations of mismanagement at the Marion VA Medical Center that may have compromised quality of care and patient safety.

“According to a memorandum dated May 31, 2017, written by the VA National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) program manager, the Marion VAMC has experienced significant declines in patient safety culture metrics and employee morale since these areas were last assessed in 2014. Specifically, the memo describes a 2015 visit by NCPS to investigate employee complaints pertaining to worsening organizational and patient safety culture at the facility. Employees also alleged that senior leadership retaliated against them for reporting such problems,” the members wrote. “VA internal documents demonstrate a strong need for the Central Office to investigate and take action to address the safety concerns.”

Mr. Trump made the surprise declaration in a series of posts on Twitter, saying he had come to the decision after talking to generals and military experts, whom he did not name.

USA Today poll – Americans split on impeaching President Trump

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/07/24/impeach-donald-trump-poll-americans-split-remove-president/501871001/

NOTE:  Here is a link to a story from USA today, that from a poll that Americans are split on the impeachment of Donald Trump.

I want to know what you think?  Trump Carried Franklin County by 71%.  The only one that might have carried the county stronger was when Glenn Poshard ran for governor.

Polls can be skewed in the way people want them to read, in my opinion.  The only one that matters is on election day.

US to ban Americans from traveling to North Korea

WASHINGTON, DC – (Matthew Lee, Associated Press.  Please click on the link above for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below.)

U.S. officials say the Trump administration will ban American citizens from traveling to North Korea following the death of university student Otto Warmbier who passed away after falling into a coma into a North Korean prison.

The officials said Friday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had decided to impose “geographic travel restriction” for North Korea, which would make the use of U.S. passports to enter the country illegal. They said the restriction would go into effect 30 days after a notice is published in the Federal Register, but it was not immediately clear when that would be. There was no announcement in Friday’s editions of the government publication. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the decision before it is announced and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two tour operators that organize group trips to North Korea said they had already been informed of the decision.
