WASHINGTON, DC (Kim Soffen and Denise Lu The Washington Post. Please Click to read the whole story here is an excerpt) On Thursday, the Trump administration released a preliminary 2018 budget proposal, which details many of the changes the president wants to make to the federal government’s spending. The proposal covers only discretionary, not mandatory, spending. To pay for an increase in defense spending, a down payment on the border wall and school voucher programs, among other things, funding was cut from the discretionary budgets of other executive departments and agencies. The Environmental Protection Agency, the State Department and the Agriculture Department took the hardest hits. The proposal also eliminates funding for these 19 agencies.

“Pi Day is more than just a good excuse to eat pie. It’s an opportunity to highlight mathematics and science education in our schools,” Foster said. “This resolution encourages schools and educators to observe Pi Day by engaging their students in interactive and fun activities that explore the exciting side to math and other STEM subjects. This lays the ground work for students to develop an interest in becoming the next generation’s mathematicians, engineers, and physicists.”

The National Pi Day resolution also recognizes the continuing importance of the National Science Foundation’s math and science education programs. Pi Day occurs every year on March 14, in honor of the number, which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Durbin In Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine To Discuss NATO, Russia

WARSAW, POLAND—U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin is in Poland today, as part of travel to three eastern European nations to discuss Russian aggression and interference in western democracies, and congressional support for the transatlantic relationship and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Durbin was joined by U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) in Warsaw for meetings with senior government officials.

In Vilnius, Lithuania, Durbin will meet with President Dalia Grybauskaite, Parliamentary leaders, and U.S. forces working with their Lithuanian counterparts.

In Kyiv, Ukraine, Durbin will be joined by U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) for meetings with Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, and other senior government officials.

“Eastern Europe and the transatlantic alliance are at critical moments in their history. We must support our allies who face the brunt of Russian cyberattacks, propaganda, military intimidation, and even invasion in the case of Ukraine. But President Trump’s disturbing  defense of Russia only emboldens Putin and further threatens to destabilize these critical democratic nations in the region,” said Durbin. “Our meetings here will focus on concerns with the ongoing assault on Ukraine as well as the continued threat of Russia, and the need for transatlantic unity on defense cooperation and sanctions. The Baltic States, Poland, Ukraine, and others in the region have friends in Congress and around the world, and together we will continue to stand with them.”

OROVILLE, CA – (Andre Byik -Oroville Mercury-Register Please click on this link to read the following stories and to keep updated on this story from Oroville’s local newspaper. Here is an excerpt.)  The surface water elevation at Lake Oroville continued to drop Sunday morning, nearing a goal of 850 feet previously set by the California Department of Water Resources despite a bout of wet weather that has flooded highways and roads throughout the north state. As of 1 p.m. Sunday, the elevation of the reservoir was 852 feet, which was down about 49 feet when water began flowing over the emergency spillway at Oroville Dam Feb. 11. Water releases down the damaged main spillway were measured at 55,000 cubic-feet per second, with inflow into the lake measured at 28,000 cfs. Officials expected outflows to outpace inflows Sunday, and the reduction in flows down the main spillway has allowed crews to view debris buildup and dredge debris piles below the chute.

Durbin Statement On Reports Of National Guard Deportation Force

Press Release from Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) Springfield

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, released the following statement after a leaked pre-decisional memo outlining a Trump Administration plan to mobilize 100,000 National Guard troops to arrest and detain unauthorized immigrants. The reports are being denied by the White House and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

From Senator Durbin's website

From Senator Durbin’s website

“The reported Trump Administration plan to mobilize as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to arrest and detain unauthorized immigrants would be a frightening exercise of police state tactics.

“Trump executive orders have re-defined criminal activity so as to make undocumented immigrants with traffic offenses priorities for deportation. The same order calls for increasing the number of ICE agents to enforce the order from 5,000 to 15,000.

“Now, this plan which would add 100,000 Guardsmen to the effort shows the extreme measures the Trump Administration would take to break up families and deport people who have lived in this country peaceably for decades.

“We cannot rein in the hateful anti-immigrant agenda of the Administration unless the American people stand in solidarity against it.

“This is not a bizarre tweet. This is a brazen, heavy-handed assault on innocent people.”

BOST BILL RESTORES CERTAINTY IN VA LEADERSHIP

Press release from Congressman Mike Bost’s office (R- Murphysboro)

Mike_Bost_official_photoWASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Representatives Mike Bost (R-IL), a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, today unveiled bipartisan legislation, the VA Health Center Management Stability and Improvement Act, to address the growing problem of VA medical centers operating without permanent directors. Rep. Bost introduced the bill along with Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA), and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI).

“No business or organization can successfully operate under a revolving door of short-term leaders – especially not one tasked with caring for America’s heroes,” said Rep. Bost.  “At a time when restoring accountability and leadership at the VA is a primary focus, we can’t afford to continue operating in this haphazard way.  As a veteran myself, it’s my duty to do my part in providing the stability necessary to ensure our veterans receive the care they deserve.”

“It’s ridiculous that we have more than 20 VA medical centers without a permanent director across the country, including James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona,” said Congressman Bill Shuster. “It makes it difficult for these facilities to succeed when there is no permanent leadership, and I strongly support legislative efforts to require the VA to address this problem.”

More than 20 VA medical centers nationwide currently lack a permanent director. Some of these facilities have not been staffed by a permanent director in almost two years. In lieu of a permanent director, these facilities have been managed by interim directors who may only serve in that capacity for an average tenure of 120 days. Rep. Bost’s legislation would require the Secretary of the VA to report to Congress with a plan for addressing the shortage of permanent directors, a shortage that could hinder the ability to engage in long-term planning and other functions necessary to improve service delivery to our veterans.

The VA Health Center Management Stability and Improvement Act:

  • Requires the Secretary of the VA to develop and submit to Congress a plan to hire highly-qualified medical directors for each medical center that lacks a permanent director within 120 days of enactment;
  • Identifies possible impediments to staffing facilities with permanent directors; and
  • Assesses the possibility of promoting and training qualified candidates from within the VA for promotion to Senior Executive Service positions.
