The Southern Illinois Miners fell by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday night to the Florence Freedom at Rent One Park in the first game of a midweek series.
The Freedom scored first in the second inning off of Corey Sessions (0-3) thanks to a triple by Collins Cuthrell and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Brower for a 1-0 lead. They extended that lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Austin Wobrock, but stranded the bases loaded when London Lindley made a highlight-reel diving catch in deep center field on a drive by Daniel Fraga, keeping the score at 2-0.
The Miners would get runners on base in the first four innings against Freedom starter Jordan Kraus (3-1), but could not bring home a run against the right-hander, who pitched seven innings in the game. Meanwhile, the Freedom scored five times in the sixth inning to extend the lead out to 7-0, including a second RBI single by Wobrock, a two-run fielder’s choice by Andrew Godbold and a two-run home run by Jose Brizuela.
The Miners would get two runs late in the ballgame against the Florence bullpen. Chris Fornaci worked a walk against Jalen Miller and Ryan Lashley did the same with two outs, setting up Justin Chigbogu, who singled to right to make the score 7-1. In the ninth, with a runner at first, Brandon Cuddy ripped a base hit to right-center field that turned into an RBI double that made it 7-2, but the Miners got no closer in suffering the loss.
Southern Illinois got two hits apiece from Chigbogu, Craig Massey and Ben Moore in the contest, while Brandon White struck out six in four innings out of the bullpen. The Miners will look to rebound in the second game of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Jared Messer will pitch for the Miners against Florence’s Tony Vocca.
