Matt Carpenter still was in a 10-2 game in the eighth inning Tuesday night at Busch Stadium because he and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny were hopeful Carpenter would hit a triple to complete the first cycle of his career. But, as few doubles as the Cardinals have hit this year, they don’t hit any triples _ they have three for the season _ so this basically would qualify as false hope.
