Christopher scores 56 second half points to defeat Goreville in a big BDC West game

By Steve Dunford

CHRISTOPHER  – The Bearcats lived at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.  Goreville coach Todd Tripp called a timeout with just over 4:00 on the clock in the fourth quarter with Christopher up 74-60.

The Blackcats started fouling hoping to trade 3 for 2.  Eric Stallman’s team did a great job guarding the perimeter and  Goreville could not put closer than 10 at 85-75, as Christopher beat Goreville 91-78.

Peyton Massey played limited minutes for the Blackcats as he rolled an ankle

I am unsure what both teams shot from the field, but I would imagine over 50%.  It was not the defense optional game that would come to mind as you would read the box score.   Both teams only had seven turnovers each.  As the game was down at Goreville was on January 11, it was one of the better high school games that I’ve had the privilege to watch.

The Bearcats jump out to a 9-2 lead, then Braden Webb became Braden Webb to lead a rally of five unanswered points cut the lead to two.  Both teams traded baskets as the Christopher had the lead after one 17-13.

The Second Quarter was nip and tuck most of the way,  The Bearcats became hot behind the arc.  There were four ties in the quarter, as the Bearcats began to pull away and had a seven point lead Cole Tosh had a stick-back at the buzzer.  Both teams go to the locker room by a 35-30 lead.

The Bearcats began to expand their lead to nine.  Goreville cuts it to five with just under four minutes on the clock, after Webb drives the line to cut the score to 45-40,  Todd Tripp calls a time-out and throws on a full court press.

It was still a five point game until the clock drops down to 1:50, and the Bearcats hit threes on four consecutive possessions.  Jared Curry hits two, and Dalton Saeger and Bryce Pratt hits one in the rally to lead Chirstopher to a 61-49 lead after three.

The fourth quarter took a while to play.  After Coach Tripp starts fouling at the four minute mark Christopher goes 16-22 at the free throw line.  It was a strategy that I agreed with from the Goreville coach.

Christopher improves to (17-6) on the season and (6-2) in the BDC West.  They will be heading to Chester on Tuesday, which is a tough place to play.  Goreville beat the Yellow Jackets 58-56 on Tuesday.

Goreville falls to (14-8) and (3-4) in the conference.  They host the Zeigler-Royalton on Tuesday before hosting the Sesser-Valier Red Devils in a rubber match for the regular season.
