SVHT Preview: #4 Sesser-Valier (5-4) vs. Waltonville (2-6)

By Steve Dunford

The number four seed in the tournament the Sesser-Valier Red Devils come into the tournament on a hot streak winning five in a row.

Their record might have been ugly, but their four losses have been against some very stiff competition.  The have a blowout win over Joe Hosman’s Massac County Patriots, and double digit wins over BDC west foes Chester and Christopher on their resume.

Waltonville’s two wins are against winless Zeigler-Royalton and Sandoval.

Sesser-Valier is probably one of the deepest teams entering into the tournament.  They have three returning starters who have started for coach Shane Garner for three years, in point guard Lukas Gunter, who I feel is the best 1A point guard in Southern Illinois.  They have sharp shooting guard Tyler Winchester, and Preston Launius who is a hybrid guard/forward.

Seeing some significant varsity minutes for the Devils last season in the post was Seth Boles and Addison Page as well as Joshua Gunter who can play anywhere.

Peyton Rock, who is a post player who was injured from football, is back in the program.  Eli Gunter, Reid Basso, and Kaden Kislewski, logged some varsity minutes.

Most of Waltonville’s offense goes thorugh McKendall Malone.  Reagan Newell, and Jaxson Haley are their two other scoring threats.  The Spartans were decimated by graduation and transfers.

On paper, the Devils are the heavily favorite.  However when these two teams get together, you can throw the record books out.  They will tip it up at 8:00 if the tournament runs on schedule.
