SVHT Preview: #1 Woodlawn (6-3) vs Zeigler-Royalton (0-6)

By Steve Dunford

In my bracketology, I did not have the Woodlawn Cardinals as the top seed, I had them as #3.  Since then, they have proved why they are the top seed, with ten point wins over Christopher and Webber Township.

The top scorers for the Cardinals is the backcourt duo of sophomore Blake McKay and Jackson Bennett.  They both played big roles on last year’s Elite Eight team in class 1A.

Zeigler-Royalton is led by 6′ 5″ freshman center Gannon Dollins.  He will be one of the top players in the Black Diamond Conference when he becomes a senior.  Cole Sanders a 6′ 2″ senior post player, and sophomore guard Jake Imhoff also are two of the main parts of Coach Matt Morgan’s team.

This game might appear as a mismatch, but it seems like Woodlawn has struggled with Z-R in the past.  The Tornadoes gave the Cardinals all they wanted in a first round game that went into overtime last year.

In their last outing, Woodlawn defeated a very good Webber Township team 53-43,   Zeigler Royalton has not played since December 8th, in which they dropped a 57-32 decision to Vienna.

Coach Matt Morgan told me after the Vienna game that he hopes they will have the chance to iron some things out during the 2 1/2 week layoff.

You have a program that represents Southern Illinois in Peoria vs. a program that is in a massive overhaul right now.  No matter the opponent, Z-R will show up and play their guts out.  When you play hard, you always have a chance, and you can walk off the floor holding your head high.
